For about 10 years now I have been a fine art photographer specializing in weddings and portraits. In the last year I have shifted and expended into a more in depth venture opening an Editorial Media company, Roberts & Co specializing in editorial photography and cinema.
Hi, my name is Jill!
Interview with JiLL
What fellow creatives do you admire and who inspires you?
I find anyone who is brave enough to create despite the opinions of others, admirable. Photographers who I've always loved following for this reason are Annie Leibovitz, John Nolan & Norman & Blake… among so so many more.
Oddly, reading old novels or watching classic old Hollywood movies. It almost unclogs my mind. clears the slate. I often get overwhelmed by creative opportunity so my mind needs to be “cleaned” so to speak”. It is kind of a reset.
What is the one thing you would change about the industry?
I wish people believed deeper in themselves and their worth as artists.
"You don't have to mould yourself to find a place in the creative world of business. Carve your own space, and eventually, people will be begin to find it." ~JILL
If you could tell your younger self anything at the point when you were starting out yourself, what would it be?
You don't need validation from social media platforms, magazines, or anyone really, to be successful. Being successful is so much vaster and deeper. Being successful means you could create something, and even if not a soul liked or understood it, you would laugh in the face of it - because you love it, you understand it. Now that is a successful artist. And when you get to that point, the right people will find you, and they will see your worth, and how dearly you have paid for it.
What Place inspires you the most?
Anywhere can be inspiring, it all depends really. I find the people in the place are usually what inspires me more than a place itself.
Emotions. Emotions are beautiful, and truly everyone of my images is inspired by an emotion.
What has been your favourite adventure so far as a photographer and content creator?
I would say the entire experience has been. I started photography 10 years ago when i was diagnosed with an aggressive mood disorder, never did I think I would be able to hold down a normal job again. The fact I was able to turn a creative passion into a career I could control and enjoy has been an amazing feat for me.
If you could share one bit of wisdom to anyone starting out, what would you tell them?
You don't have to mould yourself to find a place in the creative world of business. Carve your own space, and eventually, people will be begin to find it. Do what you love, and do it with all your passion. And if anyone speaks badly of you, remember it's only because they are not as passionate as you. You don't have room for negativity. Be confident, be kind and be you.
